Gratitude as an extension of being valued

Gratitude can often seem in short supply in many companies, but thanking people helps at every level of the organisation. Gratitude focuses the mind on the positive in your life and whatever your situation, you can find a great deal to be thankful for.

It is important to be grateful about where you are now, in order to be grateful about where you are going.

Even if you don’t enjoy your job, you can be grateful for the income it brings you, the experiences you can have, the friends you make and for the opportunities that are coming.

You might be thinking that “no one thanks me, no one appreciates me”. But just remember that if you give out positive energy and appreciation of others, you will find it coming back to you. Start appreciating what other people do for you at work. Focus on the positives, rather than the negatives. Try thanking other people, and they will begin to appreciate you in return. 

Take several minutes each day to find things for which to say thank you. It doesn’t matter who you say thank you to – God, the Universe, or other people. You can say them in your head, or out loud, or write them in a journal – whichever feels best for you. Try saying “Thank you” on your daily commute as this will give you a regular time every working day when you can reset your mind to the positive.  

This daily practice of gratitude puts the mind into a positive state for the day and will stop that feeling of dread as you travel to work. It may also stop you from being grumpy when you get home. Start with one or two things – your health, your family – and you will soon get the hang of it and find other things to be grateful for. Also, be thankful for the opportunities that are on their way to you, the people you will meet who will help you and the ideas that come to you about your future.

Being thankful is empowering at work for you and for others. Saying thank you to people for doing their jobs well is important. No matter what the job is, people need appreciation. It shows respect for that person and makes them feel more valued. You are likely to be treated better in return. Saying thank you is also a way to help difficult situations. For example, someone has made some critical comment about your work. Take a deep breath and then say “Thank you for your feedback – I appreciate the time you have put into it”. This can alter the dynamics of the situation in such a way that the criticism loses its sting and you can have an honest conversation about the subject.

Being grateful in advance also turbo charges your achievements, and boosts your confidence. If you can be thankful for achieving something, even before you have achieved it, then you are more likely to believe that you can reach that goal.

So think about the type of job you really want, be grateful that the job is coming to you, and then take action to achieve it. Focus on what you do want, not what you don’t want. Start saying thank you for the opportunity that is coming.

December is almost over and it’s time to look forward to the New Year. …

 Most people are giving up on what can be achieved by the end of 2008, and instead are looking forward to what they can do to make 2009 a brilliant year. New Year’s resolutions generally fall into certain categories – finance, health, family, happiness, and career.

 “You may be surprised by how much you can change about your job and your life, when you look at it in detail.
Spend some time reflecting on what you want to change in your working life over the holidays and come back ready to make that change in 2009″, says Joanna Penn, author of “How To Enjoy Your Job” which is packed with strategies, tips and inspiration to help you change your job and your life

 Here are the Top 10 Career Related New Year’s resolutions: 

1) Reduce work stress levels. People’s jobs are the single biggest cause of stress (Source: Hazard Magazine), and stress can contribute to health problems, obesity and depression as well as affecting your personal happiness. Identify what is stressing you about work, and aim to reduce or remove it from your job entirely. Life is too short to be miserable

2) Work part time or work from home 1 day per week. Technology now enables people to do a portion of their work from home. With broadband internet and phone access, you can do your admin tasks and attend phone conference meetings and avoid the commute. Productivity is greater at home as there are fewer interruptions. You can get more done in less time, and feel greater job satisfaction as well as seeing your family. Working 4 days a week may also be attractive to companies in this economic climate, if you can afford it yourself. Ask your Manager for the opportunity and demonstrate the value for them.

3) Up-skill and get a more challenging role. If you are bored in your job, the best way to get a new one is to up-skill and improve your resume. There may already be opportunities within your workplace to improve your skills, so look for those first. You can also do evening classes or a correspondence course to open up your career horizons.

4) Make more money. Finances are worrying for many in this climate so making more money in your job is a common goal. If you want to ask for a raise, demonstrate your value to the company first and explain why you deserve it. You might also look at ways you can make money outside of work – a small part time business or clearing your clutter and selling it on EBay.

5) Stop taking abuse from co-workers. Many people find work difficult because colleagues harass, abuse or just annoy them. Make 2009 the year you stand up for yourself, or report the co-worker who is making your life a misery. Make an effort to stay away from toxic work colleagues who drain your energy with gossip and negativity.

6) Find out what you really want to do with your life and career. Many people say they hate their job but they don’t know what else they would like to do. Identify what your skills are as well as what you would love to do. Ask other people what they think you are good at. Read some career related books and dream bigger than your current situation. You can have the career you want – it may just take some time to get there, but if you start now, you’ll get there sooner.

7) Improve work time management and efficiency. So much time is spent answering repetitive emails or attending meetings that don’t run to an agenda. Aim to cut down on pointless administration tasks and improve work efficiency. Work smarter, not harder.

8) Work proper hours and take leave. Somehow people have lost the idea of a 40 hour work week. Think how much time you spend commuting, working through lunch, working weekends, answering work emails at home and skipping leave for work commitments. Aim to reduce these and reclaim your time in 2009.

9) Actively plan your career path. Many people say that they just “fell into” their jobs. They didn’t plan to be in this job but somehow they ended up here. If you don’t decide what you want and plan to get there, then you will find this happening to you. Decide what you want with your career and set specific goals and time periods for this to happen. This will open your eyes to new opportunities and you will be empowered to achieve them.

10) Change jobs. Many of these goals may culminate in deciding to change your job in 2009, whether this is within your workplace, industry or starting something entirely new. Update your tired resume and brush up your interview skills, pump up your confidence and go get the job of your dreams!

Here is my video review of Tim Ferriss’ “The Four Hour Work Week”. Some of my favourite bits are also listed below the video.

Some top quotes and ideas from the book:

  • Lifestyle Design.  You don’t have to live the high stress, long hours life. You can assess the lifestyle you want and then design it. You don’t have to work all your life to sit on a beach at 65…you can go sit on one now for very little money. 
  • Outsource as much as possible. Weigh up how much time you spend on things. Automate them. Outsource them. Pay other people to do them if it gives you more time. Spend $30 on a cleaner once a week and spend a few hours with the family. Get someone from to write your articles for you. Virtual assistants are the way forward. [Note from JP: I have used several since reading this book and they are brilliant]
  • Be, do , have. Decide what you want in your life. Who do you want to be? What do you want to do? What do you want to have? and then get on with achieving it. Life is too short to be stuck in the office. Set extreme goals that are worth achieving. Question everything. 
  • What are you passionate and excited about? Go do that. 
  • Elimination. Have a “not to do” list and make sure you don’t do it. Don’t watch TV. Cut down your email to once a day (and then once a week). Don’t waste time being busy. Be productive in less time and spend the difference achieving your splendid goals. 
  • Find your muse. Discover a way to make money by virtual and outsourced means and free up your time to do what you love. This may take time to achieve, but you can make a plan and achieve it, so you can live a freer life. 
  • Empower people to make decisions without you. So you can have free time. 
  • If you don’t set the rules, they will be set for you. 
  • Living more is the objective. 
  • Know what you will do with this abundance of time. Look at your passions and missions. Move from a life of survival to one of passion and excitement. 
  • Experiences override possessions every time. Live life, don’t postpone it.

It’s been a big week in the world of physics!

A quick round-up for lay-people: it is a big machine that will try to collide proton beams in an attempt to find sub-atomic matter. It has never been done before. 


Why does it matter? 

  • The Earth might explode so we are all going to die. Some people think that the collision of particles will destory the earth immediately, or when the mini black holes grow big enough to consume the planet ( in a few months). Scientists have said this cannot happen, but let’s face it – this is cutting edge science and no one has a clue what will happen. So this is a great time to take stock of your life! If you thought you were going to die in several months, would you want to be in this job? 

The truth is that you are going to die sometime, even if it not imminently.
If you would not stay in the job, then why not? 
and how about making some plans to escape and do something you would love to do… 

  • Inspirational teams and passionate people. This group of scientists have been working for years to get the Hadron Collider going. But it started off with someone’s idea… then passionate people worked towards a common goal – step by step. This has not been done before so there was no book to read, no-one to ask for help. They made it up. This is truely creative, inspirational stuff!  

So the science might not thrill you but this accomplishment is demonstration that great things can be achieved over time, in small steps. Things that the mind has not even conceived yet.

Eckhart Tolle “A New Earth”

The aim of this blog is to give you ideas, tips and strategies to enjoy your job, and your life. Eckhart Tolle’s book “A New Earth” contains wisdom that can be useful for you in these areas. In thinking more, and being increasingly aware of ourselves, we can change our lives now and for the future. Here are some key excerpts from the book.

  • “Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is experience you are having at the moment.
  • The quote above leads into another favourite author of mine, Joe Vitale “Once you have learnt the lesson, you no longer need the experience.” If you want to move on from your current place, then learn your lesson first.
  • “Unease, restlessness, boredom, anxiety, dissatisfaction, are the result of unfulfilled wanting.” Happiness is contentment with what we have because there will always be more we want. Be grateful for what you have right now.
  • “Awareness is the greatest agent for change.” If you know the problem you want to fix, you can fix it. Be specific about what you want to change. There is no point just saying “I want to be happy” or
    “I want to be rich”.
  • “One of the ego’s erroneous assumptions is ‘I should not have to suffer’. Suffering has a noble purpose: the evolution of consciousness and the burning up of ego.” Look around you – no one is without suffering. Again, learn your lessons from it and find happiness where you can.
  • “Being present is more powerful than saying or doing.” Satori = moment of presence; a brief stepping out of the voice in your head, the thought processes and their reflection in the body as emotion”.
  • Feel whatever you are feeling now. Allow now. Be fully present in this moment and accept that this is you, and this is your life.
  • “Whatever you think people are withholding from you, give it to them first. Act as if you have it, and it will come.”
  • “The source of all abundance is not outside you. It is part of who you are. See the fulness of life all around you. The acknowledgement of this awakens the dormant abundance within. Abundance comes to those who already have it.”
  • “There is not only growth, birth, success, good health, pleasure and winning. There is also loss, failure, sickness, old age, decay, pain and death. Disorder erupts into everyone’s lives.” But these too are part of life, the shadow side we must also embrace and learn from. It would not be a fulness of life without them.
  • This too will pass. “Be aware of the intransience of form – inevitability of change – enjoy the pleasures of the world while they last.”
  • Be aware of your breathing as often as you are able, whenever you remember. Being aware of breathing takes attention away from thinking and creates space. One conscious breath makes space in the succession of thoughts.”
  • “When you are comfortable with uncertainty, infinite possibilities open up in your life.”
  • “Whatever you cannot enjoy doing, you can at least accept that this is what you have to do. Acceptance means – for now, for this, the moment requires this, and I do it willingly.”

Questions to shape your future

Stop and smell the flowers...

Someimes life flashes by so fast, you wonder where the time has gone?
Do you remember what you vowed back in 2000 when we all made big plans? Have those dreams come to fruition?

In 5 years time it will be 2013 – the Olympics happened last year in London, and Obama is entering his second term. What will you have achieved by then?

It is said that people overestimate what they can achieve in a year, but underestimate what they can achieve in 10 years. So, try for 5!

Here are some questions to think about today that will shape your future. Don’t constrain yourself to what you think is achievable. Sometimes you need to set big, hairy audacious goals and leave it to the Universe to help you achieve them.

  1. Where are you in 2013? A different house, different city, near the beach, in the forest, with your family, living alone, partying hard in the city or quietly by the sea. Where do you want to be?
  2. What are you doing with your life in 2013? What is your job? Do you work for a big company with lots of perks? or a small company where you make a difference? Do you own your own business? Do you love what you do? Do you wake up full of energy and ideas every day?
  3. What are your relationships and family like in 2013? Are you happy in your marriage/partnership? Do you have children? Do you spend time with other members of your family? How are your close friends?
  4. How is your health in 2013? Are you fit and active? Have you stopped smoking/drinking hard? Have you done the marathon you always said you would? Are you confident in your body? Do you love yourself?
  5. How are your finances in 2013? Are you financially free? Do you have savings? Can you buy your dream home/car/holiday? Can you afford school fees? Do you have investment income from shares, property or term deposits? (HINT: If you invest in 2008, you will be able to say yes!)
  6. How is your spirituality in 2013? (however you define it). Are you happy that your life is not just material and transitory? Do you have meaning beyond the daily grind and weekly dramas?

What are your dreams? Not just your goals – but your dreams. Free up some time and write these answers down. You don’t need to know how to get there, just listen what you want.

If you know this, you can start now – and in 2013, you won’t be in the same situation you are unhappy with now.

Randy Pausch died yesterday at 47 of pancreatic cancer. But he died having spent his last months living a huge life. Through his “Last Lecture” which went on to become a book, he touched millions of lives. He wanted to leave a message for his children, but he also inspired the rest of us.

How can his message make a difference in your working life?

  • Your work is an integral part of your life. Randy loved teaching and used his lecture at work to change people’s lives. He saw the potential in people, and believed they could achieve far more than they themselves believed. You can achieve far more than you think. You just need to find what you really want to do and then aim for it.
  • What were your childhood dreams? Are they forgotten? Did you lose your passion for life along the road of working slog? Well, it’s time to resurrect those dreams. You are still alive, and every day you can get one step closer to achieving what you want in life.
  • Randy believed in making memories and having experiences with his children and his wife. He didn’t sweat the small stuff but spent his last months ensuring that he was remembered for having fun. One of the things I do several times a year is print out my photos and stick them on coloured card in a folder. If there are not enough photos of the year so far, I know I am not having enough experiences. Are you making memories? Are you having enough fun? This is one of his quotes “Never underestimate the importance of having fun. I’m dying and I’m having fun. And I’m going to keep having fun every day because there’s no other way to play it.”
  • If you knew you had only a few months to live, what would you do? It is an intellectual exercise for us, but Randy lived these thoughts and chose to change the world with his speech. Do you want to get to the end of your life with regrets on what you didn’t do with your life? The time is now. The place is now. Get on with it. Write down your list of what you would love to do, and start ticking things off it.
  • Decide how you will achieve it, stop making excuses and do it. You can start with the small goals, maybe you want to learn to dance, or make pottery – enroll in a class. Maybe you want to travel the world – go and get some travel books from the library, some national geographic magazines from the charity shop and inspire yourself! Maybe you hate your job – well, make a plan and get out of it. The only thing limiting you, is you.

Thank you Randy. You helped us all to focus on what is truly important in life.

Why I enjoy my job now…

I love my job

People ask me why I enjoy my job now, when in the past I have been miserable.
The following are some of the main reasons – as you read them, consider if these are important to you too, and do you have the chance to achieve them in your job?  

  • Freedom of time and control. I work for myself and get paid by the day. So I can choose to go to work and get paid, or to stay at home and not get paid. I have freedom of time and control when I need it.
  • Great people. I work with a great team. My Manager trusts me to do the job and doesn’t micromanage. She lets me have time off when I need it and appreciates that I have a life outside of work. She appreciates my alternative career as an author. My colleagues are good fun, we trust each other and our personalities work well.
  • Being valued and appreciated. Even though I am a contractor, I am valued for my role in the team. I contribute and am recognised for that. I am asked for my opinion, and it is taken into account.


  • Challenge and variety at work. I work on projects that often overlap so there is always something else to do and new deadlines to aim for. I get to work on different parts of the design and have variety in the tasks I work on. There is a certain amount of stress, but there are always people who can help if the workload is too much. There is a good work/life balance focus in the organisation and we are encouraged to exercise as well as leave at a reasonable time.
  • A higher purpose and longer term focus. I have a purpose that is above and beyond my current job. I am focussing on developing my career as an author, writing and learning in my spare time. My work is not the most important thing in my life.


  • Financially rewarded. I am paid at the market rate for what I do, which is a good wage and I am able to invest and save as well as pay the bills.
  • Time for self-development. I have time every day to study and read. Although in the past, my commute has been a pain, I now appreciate it as I spend nearly 2 hours a day reading and developing myself in areas outside of work.

How did I get to this point?

It was an active decision to find a way to enjoy my job after years of job misery.
I wrote down what I wanted and aimed for that. If you have read about the Law of Attraction and synchronicity, you will know that what you focus on, you are more likely to get.  As I wrote the book “How to Enjoy Your Job”, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy and my work changed into something I enjoyed. The book contains my findings along the way and the processes that can also help you enjoy your working life.
